The Cause
* The President's Taskforce on Childhood Obesity has cited America SCORES as an exemplary model for addressing childhood obesity through afterschool programming.Childhood obesity in America has become an epidemic – a crisis that has compelled First Lady Michelle Obama develop the Let’s Move! Campaign with the goal of dropping the childhood obesity rate to just 5% by 2030. We, as a community, have the opportunity to be part of this movement every day. This September marks the first ever Childhood Obesity Awareness Month – an opportunity for us to take action and create awareness.
The Goal
In recognition of this opportunity, America SCORES Milwaukee and America SCORES Chicago will take to the streets on Thursday, September 23rd with Kick, Click, and Score! This event is our way of promoting healthy lifestyles, bringing awareness to childhood obesity and bringing the community together using soccer.
Kick, Click, and Score will also raise much needed funds to provide free after school programming to public school youth. Each day, SCORES engages urban youth across the country using soccer as a tool to keep kids off the street, physically active and engaged in the classroom. From 7am-7pm, Executive Directors Kate Carpenter (Milwaukee) and Amy Vondra-Stark (Chicago) will be out on the street juggling.
- Donate: Schools across the country are cutting funding for sports and arts programs. Help America SCORES fill this critical need. Even better, your impact will be doubled! A family foundation is now matching donations, turning your $1 donation into $2, your $100 into $200!
- Juggle: SCORES staff welcomes and challenges you the Milwaukee and Chicago communities -- individuals, families, groups, clubs, corporations, and everyone else to join us during our 12-hour juggling competition (Don't worry... you don't have to juggle for 12 hours!) Stop by. Have a few kicks, and learn about how America SCORES is positively impacting youth in our communities.
- Challenge: Call your friends. Call your alderman. Call your mayor. Call your old coach or gym teacher. Tell them “I’ll donate $50 dollars to SCORES if you go down and juggle with them on the street corner.” Tell them you’ll be watching for them on the live webcast.
The Rivalry
What city will donate the most. What city will have the best turnout. What city is the best juggler. What city will raise more awareness? Who’s city officials will show their support (both cities will be inviting city officials including their school district Superintendant). Show your Milwaukee pride or Chicago pride. Donate. Juggle. Challenge.
